For World War II history buffs, the iconic Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars" resembles one of the most famous bombers of all time.

The greenhouse cockpit configuration, along with the gun turrets, were lifted directly from the Boeing B-29 Super Fortress blueprints.

The Superfortress is the workhorse of the US Air Force, best known for dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Star Wars creator George Lucas reportedly studied 20 to 25 hours of World War II battle footage while researching the film.

Star Wars In The Reality...

Ian D'Costa of Tactical Air Network noted that Lucas was particularly enamored of the B-29 and wanted to recreate its greenhouse-style cockpit with the Millennium Falcon.

According to a 1997 interview with screenwriter Willard Huyck, a friend of Lucas', World War II dogfight footage was used as a stand-in before being edited into the original film.

"So one second you're on a spaceship with a Wookiee and the next you're on 'The Bridges at Toko-ri.' It's like, "George, what's going on?" Hayek said.

Visual effects artist Paul Huston said in his book Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy, “Joe [the pyrotechnics artist] shows me a shot of a Japanese Zero flying left to right in front of a control tower. aircraft carrier and an “aircraft carrier. "One of the reasons I started writing 'Star Wars' was because I wanted to see interesting spaceship battles," Lucas says in The Making of Star Wars by Jonathan Rinzler.

"As a kid I loved Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers, but I thought I could create an experience like watching a dogfight in a WWII movie - incredible ships sinking and they make bank in a realistic way,” Lucas continued, as noted by StarWars.com.

Whether the new Star Wars films will continue this tradition or emulate more modern aviation tropes remains to be seen, but the team's shared enthusiasm for recreating past battle scenes has resulted in some of the most memorable, exciting scenes in film history. Most of us geeks know that Star Wars is based on real events, including World War II. book,

As an excellent resource it comes with posters. Also check out https://thirteenthfloor.us/ for some great WW2 and Star Wars photos – I bought two sets for my classroom – I want my students to compare them to the original photos and discuss why we need to make sure the sources are reliable). Here are some resources for incorporating Star Wars into the classroom - I'm not going to blog about my exact lesson plans this time, but I do want to share several ideas. I would be happy to answer any questions and would appreciate it if anyone would be willing to share what they have used.

I also used the Star Wars comic book below earlier in the year with my students to teach close reading skills. Since this comic is from the point of view of a stormtrooper, one should look at the evidence given in the comic. They then write an essay based on arguments from this evidence to answer the prompt – Are stormtroopers good or bad? -We had some fascinating class discussions based on individual student interpretations of the source material. A great lesson is to teach skills rather than content—something that is difficult to do in a content-rich course like social studies. Again, I'd be happy to share more and any suggestions you might have. (Issue #21).Stormtroopers Vs. US Navy? Imperial Tie Fighter in London? It's a world imagined by two artists with their feet on the ground... and their heads in a galaxy far, far away.

Artist Billy Ludwig has created a stunning series of images that combine scenes from World War II with characters from a galaxy far, far away.

When most of us saw the second teaser for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," coming in December, we got a little too excited, then went back to our workdays. When Paris-based art director Nicolas Amiard saw the short clip -- specifically the opening scene with the Star Destroyer crashing into the sand -- it inspired the entire artwork.

That scene, Amyard told Crave Blog, led to the creation of eight images of famous ships from the "Star Wars" universe crashing into various global cities.

The Rebel Alliance appears to be victorious and bases this Imperial TIE fighter in London. Good thing there was a phone booth nearby so the pilot could call a nearby Moff and tell him the news.

In this medley, titled "Heads Will Roll," Ludwig gives a World War II soldier a weapon better than any grease gun.

How Real Wars Influenced Star Wars

From the casual demeanor of a man walking down a Tokyo street in this movie, to the way a crashed V-wing fighter jet looks like it's been down for so long, it's just part of the landscape.

V-Wings have appeared in "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" as well as several other video games and comics. Although this design was used by the Galactic Republic, elements were later incorporated into the very popular Imperial TIE Fighters, according to Wookieepedia.

The All Terrain Armored Transport, or AT-AT Walker, was used by Imperial troops as a means of encircling and dislocating enemies.

Old school (Gondola) meets new school (X-Wing Starfighter) in this movie. In fact, a gondola is more suitable for navigating the small canals of Venice than a rebel ship. What was the pilot thinking?

"The X-Wing was originally developed for the Galactic Empire, but the entire Incom design team defected to the Rebel Alliance with the prototypes, ending the deal," says Wookieepedia.

In the film, artist Amiard's sets crash a destroyer in his hometown of Paris. It sure outshines the Eiffel Tower, don't you think?

IN THE FRAME: The Millennium Falcon swoops in to save this soldier from death at the hands of a Stormtrooper. Or maybe it's just our desire.

Although not a major character in the movies, this Venator-class star destroyer -- which had the misfortune of crashing in San Francisco -- was featured in the animated series "Clone Wars."

Wookieepedia notes that the ship is "1,137 meters long (about 3,730 feet), one of the largest capital ships capable of weather operations, landing on planets to load and unload troops and vehicles."

You can see more of Amyard's work -- including a series about "The Walking Dead" -- on his Behance page.

While it may not be the most famous ship in the "Star Wars" universe, this Lucrehulk-class battleship has appeared in every episode of the three-film prequel series -- and now it's showing up in Rio de Janeiro.

The ship belonged to the Trade Federation's Trade Defense Force. The central sphere houses the ship's bridge and what Wookieepedia says are the "reactor assemblies". "The forward bulkhead of the craft has two mammoth docking bays on either side, flanked by forward docking claws."

Moscow's Red Square looks big enough for this N-1 Naboo fighter to land without crashing.

The ship has also been transformed into three prequels and originates from the planet Naboo - key characters Padme Amidala, Emperor Palpatine and Jar Jar Binks.

Han and Chevy manage to pilot the Millennium Falcon into the waters around Manhattan, saving thousands of lives -- and the new One World Trade Center building in the background.
