For World War II history buffs, the iconic Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars" resembles one of the most famous bombers of all time.
The greenhouse cockpit configuration, along with the gun turrets, were lifted directly from the Boeing B-29 Super Fortress blueprints.
The Superfortress is the workhorse of the US Air Force, best known for dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Star Wars creator George Lucas reportedly studied 20 to 25 hours of World War II battle footage while researching the film.

Ian D'Costa of Tactical Air Network noted that Lucas was particularly enamored of the B-29 and wanted to recreate its greenhouse-style cockpit with the Millennium Falcon.
According to a 1997 interview with screenwriter Willard Huyck, a friend of Lucas', World War II dogfight footage was used as a stand-in before being edited into the original film.

When Paris-based art director Nicolas Amiard saw the short clip -- specifically the opening scene with the Star Destroyer crashing into the sand -- it inspired the entire artwork.
That scene, Amyard told Crave Blog, led to the creation of eight images of famous ships from the "Star Wars" universe crashing into various global cities.

How Real Wars Influenced Star Wars
From the casual demeanor of a man walking down a Tokyo street in this movie, to the way a crashed V-wing fighter jet looks like it's been down for so long, it's just part of the landscape.
V-Wings have appeared in "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" as well as several other video games and comics. Although this design was used by the Galactic Republic, elements were later incorporated into the very popular Imperial TIE Fighters, according to Wookieepedia.
The All Terrain Armored Transport, or AT-AT Walker, was used by Imperial troops as a means of encircling and dislocating enemies.
These poor WWII soldiers are outmatched, sadly losing to an AT-AT as the Death Star looks on.

Although not a major character in the movies, this Venator-class star destroyer -- which had the misfortune of crashing in San Francisco -- was featured in the animated series "Clone Wars."
Wookieepedia notes that the ship is "1,137 meters long (about 3,730 feet), one of the largest capital ships capable of weather operations, landing on planets to load and unload troops and vehicles."
