Type 99 Mbt - The Kannada Type 99A2 is the most modern main battle tank in service with the People's Liberation Army. Development began in 2003 with vehicle testing beginning sometime in 2007 or later.
Compared to the previous Type 99 tanks, it has a number of changes in terms of firepower, mobility, security and technology, resulting in significant changes in the dimensions and sizes of the turret.
Type 99 Mbt
The Type 99A2 uses the improved ZPT98 series 125mm smoothbore main gun. It is .50 caliber and is capable of firing several rounds, including a new APFSDS with a reported muzzle velocity of 1780 m/s.
Type 99 Tank
The 1A45T Fire Control System is an improved version of those used on the previous Type 99. It features a new generation of thermal sights, a new ballistic computer and DVE-BS overlay sensors. The Type 99A2 has an independent Commanders gun, giving it full hunting capability often referred to as the main battle tank of the 3rd generation.
China is the licensed manufacturer of the 9M119M Refleks Anti-Tank Guided Missile. The Type 99A2 is capable of firing Refleks through its main gun at a range of 5.5 km and is guided by a fire control unit integrated in the main fire control system.
Secondary weapons are a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm machine gun mounted on the Cupola Commanders.
The main gun is fed by an automatic launcher of a similar design to that of the other Type 99 and is a 22-round storage tube with additional rounds stored in the turret at an unspecified location.

China has developed a 140mm main gun for the Type 99A2, hence the higher turret mount and larger gun mount. The status of the project is not entirely clear, unless there were complications with cracks in the main weapon system.
Featuring improved composite armor on the front of the hull and turret, the Type 99A2 has a newly attached front on its turret. The ship is equipped with the new Explosive Reactive Armor that is believed to be capable of defeating anti-tank weapons in combination with the charge (x2 warheads on the missile).
The new ERA is located along the sides of the turret and continues on the side of the storage racks for increased protection. The ERA is still in front of the hull.
The vehicle is equipped with smoke grenade launchers, an NBC system and a fire suppression system in combat zones.

There has been much speculation as to what type of new Operational Protection System the Type 99A2 will be compatible with.
The new system does not have "hard-off" optical launches. Mounted on the roof is a laser elephant and engagement machine believed to have ZM87 power (power to blind the enemy gunner). It has the ability to take off at a high angle to jam anti-tank helicopters.
The car has been fitted with a new gearbox and a 1500hp engine. It is not 100% clear if this new device is based on license production (China produces many license parts for commercial and military adaptation) or if it is a new domestic device. The vehicle has increased capabilities compared to previous Type 99 models, and China observes a general trend towards Western and Russian tanks.
Chinese officials refer to the tank as the "first information technology tank" thanks to the new onboard software that monitors all systems and reports any issues or problems they encounter. The crew has new quality digital displays.

The tank has different names in China than those used outside China. Instead of "Type" China says "ZTZ 99". While outside of China it is called "Type 99A2" in China it is referred to as "ZTZ 99A" or sometimes ZTZ 99A2.

The vehicle is a replacement for the older Type 88 produced in the late 1980s. The Type 99 MBT is China's first third-generation main battle tank. China's third-generation domestic MBT development began in 1989, under China's eighth-year plan. In the early 1990s China produced one of the second generation examples, the Type 90-II series. The Type 90-II was designed by studying the T-72 tank.

The Type 90-II had a 125mm smoothbore gun with an automatic loader, modular mesh armor and a square driver's seat.
While the Type 90-II series ultimately did not gain PLA service, it did find success as an export tank and was built under license in Pakistan as the Al-Khalid.

The updated Type 99 was officially unveiled on Victory Day 2015 as the Type 99A.

This variant was previously used by PLA troops during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) military exercises in 2014.
By 2008, 200 Type 98 and Type 99 tanks may have been deployed to the Beijing and Xiang military districts.
As of 2020, more than 1200 Type 99 and Type 99A units have been deployed to PLAGF operations, forming a critical command force of the PLA's heavy coalition forces.

The Type 99's 125mm gun is capable of firing APFSDS-T, HEAT, Frag-HE-T and anti-tank missiles (ATGM). The missile could launch multiple Kannada, Russian and former Warsaw Pact targets. The Type 99 can fire GP125 ATGMs charged in a tandem pattern similar to the Russian Invar with a range of up to 5 km.
The DTW-125 Type II APFSDS weapon is estimated to be capable of penetrating 700 mm of RHA (wrapped armor) at 1000 meters and less than 600 mm of RHA at 2000 meters.
Firearms are estimated to penetrate 500mm of armor. The missile has a range of 5000 meters during the day and a range of 4000 meters during the night operation.

It is capable of operating 960 mm RHA at 1000 meters and 800 mm RHA at 2000 meters due to self-ignition.
Secondary armament consists of a 12.7mm QJC-88 machine gun in the commander's cupola and a coaxial 7.62mm MG. The 12.7mm machine gun has an elevation of -4 to 75 degrees.
The Type 99 has anti-lethal capabilities, operating the ISFCS-212 fire control system with an automatic IR target finder.

The Type 99A MBT is equipped with an advanced fire control system (which includes a new 3rd generation sighting system, ballistic computer and weather meters) thus improving ballistic tracking under adverse conditions. The skipper also has an independent panoramic sight with a laser range finding function that can rotate 360 degrees. Both the gunner's and commander's sights are fully stabilized and are capable of working day / night.
Designed for target identification (IFF), tracking and tracing. The original Type 99 uses an active laser defense system for external or enemy reconnaissance equipment, but the operation can be compromised in adverse weather conditions. Instead, the radar system offers a more reliable all weather capability.
