Type 99a Tank - The Chinese Type 99A2 is the most modern MBT in service with the People's Liberation Army. Development began in 2003 and vehicle testing began in 2007 or later.

Compared to the earlier Type 99 tanks, a number of changes were made in terms of firepower, mobility, protection and technology, resulting in changes in hull and turret dimensions.

The 1A45T fire control system is an improved version of the fire control system used on the earlier Type 99. It is equipped with the latest generation thermal imaging sights, a new ballistic computer and DVE-BS crosswind sensors. The Type 99A2 has an independent commander's sight, giving it full hunter-killer capabilities, often referred to as a third-generation MBT.

China is the licensed manufacturer of the 9M119M Refleks anti-tank guided missile. The Type 99A2 is capable of firing its Reflex main gun at a range of 5.5 km and is guided by an integrated fire control unit in the main fire control system.

Secondary weapons are a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7 mm machine gun mounted on the commander's turret.

The main gun is fed by an autoloader similar in design to other Type 99s and is cabled to store 22 rounds of ammunition with additional rounds stored in the turret at an unspecified location.

China is developing a 140mm main gun for the Type 99A2, hence the higher turret roof and large gun cowling. The status of the project is not entirely clear except that there have been complications with firing the main gun system.

With improved composite armor on the front of the fuselage and turret, the Type 99A2 has a new modular shape of the turret front. The vehicle is equipped with new explosive reactive armor, which is believed to be able to defeat tandem anti-tank weapons (x2 warheads per shell).

The new ERA is mounted along the sides of the tower and continues along the side storage shelves for added protection. The ERA is also mounted on the front of the fuselage.

There has been much speculation about the type of new active protection system the Type 99A2 will be installed on.

The new system does not have a visual "hard kill" launcher. Mounted on the roof is a portable laser detection and jamming device believed to have the ZM87 capability (the ability to blind an enemy gunner). It has the ability to lift at a high angle to block anti-tank helicopters.

The vehicle is equipped with a new gearbox and a 1500 hp engine. It is not 100% clear if this new engine is based on licensed production (China produces many components under license for commercial and military adaptation) or if it is a new indigenous engine. The vehicle has improved off-road capabilities over earlier Type 99 models, and China considers overall mobility comparable to Western and Russian tanks.

Chinese officials are calling the tank "the first IT tank" thanks to new onboard software that monitors all systems and reports any problems. The crew has new digital quality displays.
